This workshop offers teachers practical activities that explore media and experimentation designed to engage students and develop their confidence and expand their ideas of observation and drawing. Contemporary drawing practice can be a good starting point to develop students’ creativity, drawing skills and confidence without the pressure of a photographic likeness.
Contemporary drawing processes encourage the exploration of media, concepts, and materiality as artists incorporate processes such as burning, cutting, scratching, sticking, writing and sewing, and using unusual materials from wax and gold to candle soot. Drawings can be made by attaching a pencil to your computer mouse, by rubbing out, while blindfolded, or while walking. Drawing can blur the boundaries between disciplines such as sculpture, land art and even performance.
Winsome Jobling is a Darwin-based artist and educator. Her diverse practice includes printmaking, papermaking, drawing and sculpture with a focus on experimentation with materials to highlight our impact on the natural world.
