Working with groups in art galleries can be a fantastic way to engage students in active learning outside the classroom. During this informal session we will have an introduction to the Ned Kelly exhibition and spend some time investigating different approaches to engaging students with these works during a gallery visit. We’ll also discuss how these strategies can be applied to responding to any kind of art, and the ways we can engage with works of art to facilitate learning in other subject areas.
In the second half of the session we’ll focus on how the approaches we use in the gallery can be employed in the classroom if you can’t bring your class to the gallery; and strategies for scaffolding gallery visits with pre and post-visit class activities when you can.
