About Namuru:

Namuru means ‘path’ or ‘compass’ in the language of the Gadigal people, the
traditional owners of the land and waters that the Mueum of Contemporary Art (MCA) is situated upon.
Developed by the MCA’s Coordinator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Learning and delivered with MCA Artist Educators, Namuru aims to build
confidence in the delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content in the
classroom.

The program draws on the principals of the MCA’s Indigenous Cultural Learning
Framework to provide a foundation for the development of learning experiences in
response to the exhibition John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new.

Through Namuru, participants will gain a deeper insight into the work of John
Mawurndjul, and an understanding of best practice strategies for approaching
teaching and learning about contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art
and artists.

The Namuru program includes:

• Approaches to delivering an Acknowledgement of Country.
• The MCA’s Indigenous Cultural Learning Framework – best practice
guidelines for the development of teaching and learning
experiences about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and
artists.
• Cultural Safety
• Language and terminology
• Introduction to John Mawurndjul’s practice
• Creative learning strategies for supporting student engagement with
artworks
• Approaches to studio art-making experiences
• Online learning resources to support the study of John Mawurndjul’s
practice in the classroom

This workshop is applicable for Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary teachers.

The workshop will be online.
Wednesday 24 March 2021, 3-5pm, for up to 15 participants.
A link will be sent to participants before hand.

The workshop is guided by the principals of the MCA’s Indigenous Cultural Learning Framework.
