AENT talk with the Curator of CDU Gallery

AENT has been invited to come and meet CDU Gallery curator Kellie Joswig and check out the great exhibition ‘People Like Us’. CDU gallery is providing some complimentary light refreshments.

This exhibition is very accessible for a younger/student audience with an interest in new media.
Touring around Australia through Museums and Galleries of NSW, People Like Us is a selection of twelve new media works by award-winning Australian and international artists. Collectively, the works speak of our search for identity and concerns of universal importance, such as politics, environment, health and well-being, and place-making in our contemporary worlds. Several of the works are interactive, such as Veloscape by Laura Fisher and Volker Kuchelmeister that incorporates a stationary bicycle for visitors to ride for a (fun!) glimpse of inner-city Sydney; the pace of the bike-ride is determined by the pedalling speed of the person on the bike.
There is a scientific/medical element to some of the works, including a fascinating (and slightly sci-fi) short film of a key-hole surgery conducted remotely by a surgeon operating robotic arms. The portraits of five cats and their individual purrs, channelled via headphones is a quirky piece and one of three dedicated sound installations. Another work, Angelica Mesiti’s Rapture (Silent Anthem) is a silent slow-motion film of young people enthralled at a rock concert – Mesiti recently won the Blake prize for this work. The 2017 Sulman Prize-winning artist Joan Ross’ work also features: The Claiming of Things cleverly uses animation and everyday sounds as a witty and thought-provoking visual narrative of contemporary Australian society. Ross was at CDU Art Gallery in March, and gave a great floor-talk about her work.
