The Northern Territory made our mark last year. We showed the world how we could work together, protect those most vulnerable and be the only state in Australia to have no community transmission of COVID19. We experienced joy, normality, and had a wonderful time enjoying what the territory has to offer, whilst others faced a very different, new normal. In 2021, other states and territories join the NT in recovery, but we will forever be remembered and as the territory that lead the way and made our mark.

COVID19 started overseas but due to travel and how frequent people used to move around, it rippled into Australia. It changed other states, and they lost their freedom. They felt like they were going round in circles but we were lucky in the Northern Territory with no community transmission. There were ripples of community action and supporting local business. There were ripples of people coming together and exploring our own backyard. Some ripples we had control over, and others we didn’t. In 2021, we recover from the ripple effect, both positive and negative ripples and so are in recovery.

The Darwin Mandala series is a celebration of the environment, the seasons and cycles that we experience living in the tropics.
The storms rolling in across the water, the cumulous clouds skidding across the deep blue sky, the sunflowers blooming with their faces turned toward the sun.
Each season has its own delights, and for me it is important to slow down and take notice.

Haumea is a the Hawaiian Goddess of growth and fertility. She mothered many other Hawaiian deities. My last holiday was to Hawaii and I feel since Covid as a community we have grown, taken check of what really matters. However in this process, many have felt segregated and isolated and I have communicated this by painting Haumea across 4 different boards. Another quality of the painting I that I painted Haumea on the financial pages of The Australian newspaper. This was to make commentary on the fragility of the country’s economy, and at the end of the day, when there is nothing left, we can’t eat money.

These towering ant hills were grouped together, all facing the same direction. Many were jagged at the top like a serrated knife, and had holes in them. As we were travelling through them a group of brumbies came galloping past us, dodging the mounds and smothering everything in fine dust.

The second of the two emus to be felted, “Dotty’ caught my attention with her “you are embarrassing me, so I am ignoring you” stare. Married to Eric, this was a stare that Dorothy often resorted to. In real life, Dorothy was Eric’s wife and the best mum in law (or mum in love) that anybody could wish for. Again, there was no other choice of title, because from the moment that I saw this amazing emu, no other name worked. Dorothy has an ability to look at difficult circumstances and situations and find creative ways to bring good out of them. My desire for this piece of work is that we can acknowledge our climate change issues, but then make a choice to find creative solutions.

There was no other choice of title, because from the moment that I saw him, this emu had to be called Eric. I seriously hope that Eric’s delightful personality shines through this piece of work and that he inspires us to look for the beauty in our surroundings and make every effort to care for what we been blessed with, for future generations to enjoy.

The Frida Skirts use recycled tshirts and assorted cloth , hand printed and stitched in a collage technique to make something striking and colourful to wear. The skirts are part of my collection that I started for Sustainable Couture Alice Springs, an incredible group of people that initiated an annual fashion show promoting upcycled fashion.

This series of skirts were started in lockdown, hence the title. Lockdown Skirts were started in 2020 and completed in 2021. The inspiration came initially from creating work for the fashion show Sustainable Couture in Alice Springs back in 2018. The incredible group that runs this show believe whole heartedly in recycling cloth as much as possible to avoid the massive amount of landfill that cloth contributes towards each year.
I have hand printed many of the pieces of fabric that make up the panels of each skirt, some with my own block prints and some with bought ones. I selected t-shirt fabrics so that the skirts are ultimately comfortable as well as stylish to wear.

My artwork has been made when I have been on holidays from my very demanding Art Teaching role.
During the term breaks I find that I have the time to practice the art practices that I engage my students with. I often head off to coastal places, locally and sometimes interstate. Being near the water always inspires me, it relaxes me and it gives me time to create artwork. The two artworks in this exhibition are watercolours, gouache, and pen on paper, both drawing from observation and memory.

Mr 0, is an elder in the community and operates with extreme resilience, poise, gentleness, patience and most of all a generosity and gratitude that you don’t see so much anymore. He is a man of few words but always sure to speak his mind to express gratitude or an opinion on the wellbeing of young people. He is always proactive in doing what he can to look after the children in the community.
I admire his gratitude, gentleness and generosity while living a life that is what most of us would consider harsh.
I work as a teacher on community. I also teach Visual Art and find it very rewarding to see artwork produced by children. I was a practicing artist 15 – 20 years ago but have worked less and less on my own artwork since becoming a teacher.

The Sea Turtle Mosaic Table is a handmade ceramic tile mosaic that I made in response to an Endangered Species exhibition that the Territory Wildlife Park organised at Tactile Arts a few years back. The mosaic panel was exhibited on mosaic mesh, allowing for a variety of installations in which to position it.
Recently, I mounted this mosaic panel onto a beautiful wooden table that a friend gave me specifically for repurposing, particularly one that could be transformed using mosaic. The image of marine life is still relevant today, as we continue to deal so with the threat of global warming and the impact this is having on all of nature.

Protector of the heart and the home, the Mosaic Goddess started naturally during this weird pandemic time. I found myself drawn to creating powerful images of women and the home. The goddess is both deductive and strong, closing her eyes in peaceful concentration. I believe in the power artworks can emanate, if you surround yourself with them.
The handmade tiles are made from pressing clay into Indian woodblocks that I bought in Darwin several years ago and have been used many many times in varying forms, from creating cycads for mosaic artworks at the Territory Wildlife Park, to becoming wings, tails and fins for gods and creatures.

Cycads in the Top End are such resilient and well adapted species to the harsh and extreme environments they thrive in. In the wet their feet are often submerged for months, but in the dry they are burnt to the point of looking dead. Yet several weeks later they are sprouting soft feathery fronds that turn from white to vibrant green in days. Truly amazing.

I painted her and was successful in Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award so it has been hanging in the Araluen Arts Precinct for a few months in Alice Springs. This is first time it has bee shown in Darwin and as I painted it during Covid mayhem last year I thought it good to view again. I hope my Matisse passion is obvious in my brush work technique.
