Artist Statement:
A typical scene in the Wetlands and billabongs of the Northern Territory, if you are lucky enough to spot them! A gentle watercolour with a bit of mixed media to give more character to the tree and foreground.

This series is about collecting and my love of beachcombing. Every fish I catch and shell I find I identify and paint. I have incorporated machine stitching into the images, mainly for aesthetic purposes but to remind the viewer of the fragility of the sea environment and what else lies beneath the water.

Mediums: Acrylic on Canvas, Sealed Termite Mound Cross-Sections, found metal grate
Dimension: 65cm x 12.5cm x 3.5cm
Artist Statement:
A piece about what becomes revealed after the bushfires have gone through. The Termite mounds present as stark commanding structures against the burnt earth, an opportunity arises to admire the amazing chambers within the mounds and sometimes you can stumble across the most interesting pieces of metal that are revealed after the fire.

Mediums: Acrylic on Canvas, leaves and bush vine
Dimension: 25cm x 30cm x 3.5cm

On a recent camping trip out bush, I was sad to see the proliferation of the Black Wattle saplings (an invasive species native to SE Australia) in amongst the native bush land which was home to many beautiful species of Ghost Gum. In this small piece I have wrapped/strangled the Ghost Gum leaves up with a type of bush vine, that was also strangling part of a Ghost Gum. On top I have placed some Black wattle leaves shown here to be weaving their way back into the native bush, eventually choking up this area of bush land.

My penchant to a classical tradition of including a fruit in a mundane afternoon encouraged me to depict it aglow onto my paper. Something a delight that I can’t get tired obeserving until the following morning, a hope.

The shipping containers I pass on my way to work everyday are visually appealing to me. I love the Darwin retro urbanisation that still seem untouched, subtle and scattered in many corner pockets of this city.

Over the last couple of years I have been working on a series of paintings which I refer to as ‘Time layers’. These works are part of a long running interest and exploration into mortality and time.
My recent work explores finding beauty while accepting our ephemeral nature. A new way of representing an age-old contemplation: one’s life span
My mixed media work is based on capturing a mark, a letter or memento of an individual, residual evidence of their experience and/or relationship from that particular time and place…often represented through a suggested landscape appearing in layers as if revealing a cross section view.

Tidal expresses the connection between the abundant, fertile nature of the oceans, seas and surrounding environs of the Oceanic region, and the variety and richness of culture that developed there. The colourful flowing skirt mimics and ebb and flow of the ocean currents and the trade winds. While its colour embodies the oceans richness. The skirt and belt are encrusted with jewels which symbolise the treasures of the ocean collected by man. The headdress, collar and staff are symbols of human culture and are an acknowledgement of the peoples, tribes and races of Oceania.

Usually I make my own texture in handmade paper and teach others how to make paper from recycling cotton, denim and plants into unique papers. Texture on paper is something I enjoy creating and this painting is mostly watercolour on 100% cotton Arches paper. I wanted the feel of the rocks to be tactile to the viewer to want to touch the textures and be part of the scene. A tropical scene common in the Northern Territory we can all relate to and enjoy.

Mediums: Wire grass handcrafted, upcycled lampshade and base
Dimension: 40cm x 36cm x 36cm
Artist Statement:
This lamp has been up-cycled to become something beautiful and functional again. The now new lamp shade is made from handcrafted, wire grass paper produced during an ‘Artist in Residence’ I recently undertook at Curtin Springs Station near Uluru. Other contrasting papers included on the lamp base and lamp shade were made using rusting techniques learnt during the residency.
The ‘Artist in Residence’ enabled me to see a different landscape and lifestyle to our tropical north. This dry, desert landscape provided further ideas, colours and images to incorporate into the recycled papers I produce. Being a recycled paper maker in the NT for more than 20 years it was great to be involved with harvesting the native grasses from the Station, cooking up the grasses and peeling off the finished paper product to be able to produce this up-cycled lamp shade.
